Did you know that at the end of the day if I don't feel comfortable tattooing you, I dont have to?
Lately I have been having quite a few people come into the shop wanting to get finger tattoos.
ROCK ON. Hand tattoos are RAD. Finger tatoos are COOL. But let me tell you my experience with them.
I got my finger tattooed two years ago by someone who doesn't do them a lot. It fell out (the ink disappeared) almost immediately. I was so sad. I saw this shit on pinterest and I wanted it. Why doesnt it look like pinterest? Well...two years later I can tell you why.
PINTEREST IS A LIAR.
For the most part images of tattoos on pinterest are FRESH. They are new they are bright, crisp and clean. Have you ever seen a healed finger tattoo? They (for the most part) don't look like that. They look like you drew them on with a sharpie and then used some moisturizer. They bleed, the lines double in size or they go away and make your hands look dirty.
I have since had my finger tattoo redone once and let me tell you, it is one of the best at this size I've seen, let alone done, and I am ok with it. I like how it looks and I understand that's how they should look. A lot of the time a client walking in with little to no tattoos doesn't. When you walk in and reference a couple ladies from moms group who got infinity anchors on their pinky fingers and they look FINE all I can do is tell you this:
I could take your money. I can buy as many sour jube jubes with that commision as I can carry to my car - but I'm not going to. I don't want you to have to have a bad tattoo because YOU WANT IT AND YOU WANT IT NOW. I will do my best to let you know I love finger tattoos but for the average person they aren't necessarily worth the few sweet instagram pictures they will get you. They cost. A finger tattoo is a minimum charge and at our shop thats $125. If I warn you against it multiple times and you still get it - I don't touch them up for free. As a tattooer I can get my work touched up monlthly if my heart and my good friend Stepho so desires - most people cannot.
What it comes down to I suppose is, if your artist warns against something consider that they have seen it, done it, and learnt from it. You don't have to. Thank them. Consider their wise words as if they just pulled you from oncoming traffic or in this case - saved you from yourself.
*Yes, I have done and occasionally do do finger tattoos depending on the appropriate design.*
SHOP GALLERY (none of these are done by me):
AMBAH has that popular kitteh. He has been touched up three times. These are all under 2 years old. The blue one is blown out.
Rachael, should you get your inner fingers tattooed? No.
Caleigh has some of the best of our group. The reason why? She commited to the size and the font is readable, simple, and clean.
Goodbye Kitteh on sweet Cody.
The bottom has been touched up three times and has a hard scar tissuey mass at the bottom of the P if you have a look.
The right triangle was supposed to be solid and pink.
